What Does that Mean? Terms to know when talking about Narcolepsy by Wake Up Narcolepsy. Automatic Behaviors: When an individual continues engaging in whatever habitual activities they were doing, but in a semiautomatic way without conscious awareness (ex. eating talking, driving a familiar route). These can be unsettling experiences for individuals and may put them in harm's way. Individuals experience these in different ways and to different extents, but often have no memory of the behaviors after. Automatic behaviors can lead to psycho-social impairments and affect relationships, academic performance, professional success and leisure activities.

This can lead to: difficulty thinking, concentrating and/or forming thoughts, difficulty focusing on, following and/or carrying on conversations, being more forgetful, forgetting things you normally wouldn't.

What Does That Mean? Terms to know when talking about Narcolepsy - Wake Up Narcolepsy. Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) - Conducted after the overnight portion of a sleep study (PSG), the MSLT is a series of naps to assess the quality of sleep at night and the degree of sleepiness during the day. 4-5 naps scheduled at 2 hour intervals beginning a couple hours after you wake up. Falling asleep quickly and entering REM sleep during naps is an indication of Narcolepsy. Documents how readily a person can fall asleep, REM patterns, eye movements, heart rate, chin movements and certain brain activities.

Narcolepsy Type One (NT1) Also known as: Narcolepsy with Cataplexy - Caused by low levels of orexin/hypocretin in the brain, Narcolepsy Type Two (NT2) Also known as: Narcolepsy without Cataplexy - Normal orexin/hypocretin levels in the brain
