LPGA Golfer Nicole Jeray Raises More Than $35,000 to Benefit Narcolepsy Sufferers

Swinging for Sleep (SFS) Campaign Benefits Wake Up Narcolepsy and another patient advocacy organization

Worcester, MA – January 10, 2013 – In 2012, its inaugural year, LPGA golfer Nicole Jeray’s Swinging for Sleep (www.nicolejeray.com/swinging-for-sleep) campaign brought in a total of more than $35,000 to benefit Wake Up Narcolepsy (WUN) (www.wakeupnarcolepsy.org) and another patient advocacy organization, both nonprofits working to improve the lives of the millions worldwide living with this debilitating, lifelong sleep disorder. The campaign received sponsorship from Jazz Pharmaceuticals (www.jazzpharma.com), with additional sponsorship in 2013.

“Narcolepsy is a neurological condition that often takes years to properly diagnose. I’ve battled this challenging illness myself for years, so I understand all too well how important it is to help others living with it,” said Jeray, of Berwyn, IL, and Augusta, GA. “I’m so pleased Swinging for Sleep is helping to support the needs of patients and bring attention to this under- and mis-diagnosed condition.”

“WUN is thrilled to partner with Nicole and Jazz Pharmaceuticals through the innovative Swinging for Sleep campaign,” said Monica Gow, WUN executive director. “We will leverage monies raised through SFS to support ongoing narcolepsy awareness and education to build a strong support system for sufferers everywhere.”

About Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a neurological condition that affects some 200,000 Americans and 3 million people worldwide. The disorder is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and other symptoms, and may first appear in young people. Many sufferers also experience episodes of cataplexy, brief but debilitating periods of muscle weakness or complete physical collapse usually brought on by emotions such as laughter or surprise. It is important for any individual who may have any of these, or other sleep disorder symptoms, to consult with an appropriate healthcare provider.

Narcolepsy can impair a variety of facets of a person’s life, from social relationships and selfesteem, to education and career choice. Although treatment is available for most sufferers, the delay in proper diagnosis can have a significant impact on the individual.

Many teachers, physicians, parents and others who could help are not familiar with it symptoms. So delayed or inaccurate diagnosis can lead to years of difficulty. Raising public awareness and enhancing medical research will help the many people worldwide living with narcolepsy.

Wake Up Narcolepsy, Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to broadening awareness of narcolepsy and accelerating the pace of medical discovery for the disorder.
