Narcolepsy Awareness Events to Celebrate 2017 Sleep Week

In anticipation of 2017 Sleep Week, the WUN Board of Directors has been busy increasing awareness about narcolepsy throughout the US and Canada.  During the first week of April, Laura Fabrizio, Board Chair, had two exciting speaking engagements in Michigan – she spoke at the Department of Neuroscience at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and she presented at the Department of Neurology Conference at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Laura Fabrizio and Dr. Andrew Gall at Hope College

Dr. Andrew Gall, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Hope, contacted Laura to speak about her son Nicholas’ patient journey from onset of symptoms to diagnosis of narcolepsy and cataplexy. She also shared the impact that narcolepsy has on Nicholas’ daily life.

Additionally, Laura was invited to present Nicholas’ medical symptoms and patient journey at the Department of Neurology at William Beaumont Hospital.  The conference included medical residents from different specialties along with attending Neurologist, Dr. Gary Trock. Dr. Trock outlined the clinical symptoms related to narcolepsy and cataplexy, onset to diagnosis and possible treatment for both Type 1 and Type 2 narcolepsy.

The conference also provided a personal account of Nicholas’ patient journey from onset at age 8, the struggle with diagnosis, and daily living with narcolepsy and cataplexy.
